Regardless of the validity of that particular claim, I don’t really hold it against the author or consider it a knock on the overall quality of these essays. It did admittedly raise some concern for me, but nobody can have the “correct” take 100% of the time if it is indeed incorrect.

We watched the Gemini launches &c in grade school. I have a vague memory of an interview during one of these shows with a woman — rather grandmotherly-looking, iirc — who had figured out how to construct an airtight seam for the suits astronauts would need. They were all very proud of how this ordinary citizen had figured out a small but vital part of the space program.

I don’t recall that they showed the construction of the seam. Given the other commenter’s remarks about the David Clark Company, that interview (which I doubt I dreamed; not at that age) must have been more disinformation.
