Regarding the photo of Robert E. Lee and his generals, the photo includes a turkish ambassador a lawyer and other non-generals, seated.

In three instances, the names on the back of the photograph are followed by a question mark, and one person is labeled an “unidentified man.” The list of people in the photo is therefore taken from the article by Franklin Parker.

Left to right standing: General James Connor, General Martin W. Gary, General John Bankhead Magruder, General Robert D. Lilley, General P.G.T. Beauregard, General A.R. Lawton, General Henry A. Wise, General Joseph L. Brent

Hi,

Do you know why your dad included George McClellan in this page? He was definitely a traitor to the union despite being a union general. I think your dad was a little confused with his argument that this was a pro-unionist group. Within the northern elite, there was a deep sympathy for the confederacy which was kept in check by junior officers and radical republicans outside of it. Thomas Edward Key, McClellan's aide de camp (in the way that Cheney was Bush's aide de camp) even tried to broker a deal with the confederacy to end the war and keep slavery in direct defiance of Abraham Lincoln. There's a constant pattern of union generals and officials punishing their subordinates for:

- defending themselves against confederate raids. No, I'm not kidding- Nathaniel Lyon mobilizes to defend the St. Louis Armory so that confederates won't take arms, (reasonable, right?) In retaliation, Sterling Price, a "union" general, defects to the confederacy because of his alleged disgust with insubordination but really he was just upset that his buddies to the south couldn't get free weapons

-getting water from confederate wells in a place where there was no other source of water (Don Carlos Buell)

Under Buchanan, secretary of state Lewis Cass would send armaments to places the confederates could easily raid. Buchanan would then refuse to send troops to defend these places. The rank and file of the union army were the ones that protected the union. There are a lot of lessons from the US Civil war with regards to US ruling class complicity that apply today.

Lincoln became serious about ending slavery, that made him a threat. Really good research by your father, a shame he's not around to do more.

I hate to show up with an apparent complaint when I like the site and your dad's writing style so much, but you should centre the photo of "Union General George McClellan" and give those caption words in the same subtitle style as the others. (Thanks for keeping the site up and feel free to delete this as a useless comment.)

In reference to the assigned defense attorney for Mary Surratt- Frederick Aiken, it is stated "Very little else is known about the young Defense Attorney". When I read this chapter of Mr. McGowen's Lincoln Assassination story, and reflected back on that statement concerning Mr. Aiken, it dawned on me that I had seen a movie recently about this subject matter and at the very end of the film it states that Frederick A. Aiken lived to become the first city editor of The Washington Post. So, upon doing a little homework I found an excellent 29 page PDF article by Christine R Christensen, entitled "Finding Frederick". I believe that it can be accessed on the website of The Surratt House Museum. Ms. Christensen really did some in-depth research into the life story of Attorney Aiken. A very worth while read.
